Rwanda signaled that it could withdraw its troops from northern Mozambique, where they’ve played a central role in securing the Cabo Delgado region, the site of $50 billion in natural gas projects.
The Rwanda Defence Force, which has deployed thousands of soldiers to fight an Islamic State-linked insurgency since 2021, this month came under US sanctions for its role in the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo. European Union funding for the troops in Mozambique expires in May, with no current plans to extend the support.
