Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester and potential leadership challenger to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, said his comments last year that Britain was “in hock” to the bond markets had been “twisted for political reasons,” and blamed successive Westminster governments for failing to boost growth.

“I point the finger at the Westminster political system and the inherent volatility it brings with its emphasis on point scoring and short-term thinking — that’s the problem,” Burnham told Bloomberg News on Tuesday at the MIPIM real estate conference in Cannes.
