GOP Leader Warns Trump on Muscling Senate Over Voting Bill
President Donald Trump’s efforts to force Republicans to pass a partisan overhaul of voting laws risks bringing congressional business to a halt with no clear path to success, Senate Majority Leader John Thune warned Monday.
Trump has vowed to refuse to sign almost every other bill until the “SAVE America Act” reaches his desk. But to pass the legislation in the Senate, Thune would either need to abandon the long-standing filibuster rule, which requires a 60-vote threshold for most bills, or use a time-consuming maneuver that could eat up months of senators’ time.
