Prime Minister Mark Carney called special elections to fill three vacant seats next month, setting up a high-stakes political fight as he seeks a majority in Canada’s House of Commons.

The by-elections will be held on April 13 to fill two seats in Toronto and one in the Montreal region, according to a statement Sunday. If the prime minister’s Liberal Party wins all three, it would hold 172 of 343 House seats — a bare majority.
