Why the US Torpedo Attack on an Iranian Warship Matters, In Maps
The US torpedoing of an Iranian warship in international waters off Sri Lanka’s coast signals an alarming turn in the war unfolding more than 2,000 miles (3,000 km) away in the Middle East.
Around 100 sailors aboard the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena were dead or missing after a US submarine struck the vessel. The ship had been returning home after taking part last month in the International Fleet Review, a major maritime exercise that was hosted by India. Iran participated along with 40 other countries — including the US.
