Iran Poised to Name New Supreme Leader With US Watching Closely
Iran‘s top clerics are nearing a decision on the country’s next supreme leader after Ali Khamenei was killed in the US-Israeli war on the Islamic Republic, with the wartime council laying bare divisions among political factions over the succession and the signal it would send to Tehran’s adversaries.
The Assembly of Experts, the body mandated to choose Khamenei’s successor, has narrowed its list of candidates and will announce a decision “as soon as possible,” members told Iranian state media over the past two days.
