When Joe Mansueto went looking for a new home for his Chicago Fire Football Club, he did something unusual. He said he would pick up the tab.

The billionaire founder and executive chairman of Morningstar Inc., the investment-research company, is privately funding a $750 million stadium for the Major League Soccer team, with construction starting just south of downtown Chicago on Tuesday. It will be the first new pro-sports facility built in the city since the Bulls and Blackhawks opened the United Center in 1994.
