Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government delayed parliament voting on a bill that would separate the roles of the attorney general and public prosecutor, a day after a landmark bill to limit the prime minister’s tenure failed.

The bill — part of a pair of key constitutional changes long promised by Anwar - was instead sent to a parliamentary committee to propose amendments, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Azalina Othman told lawmakers on Tuesday. The bill is intended to increase prosecutorial independence from the executive and limit political interference in the prosecutor’s decisions.
