South Africa is preparing to deploy soldiers to help tackle gang violence and illegal mining, challenges the police have struggled to contain.

Operations are planned in the Gauteng, Eastern Cape and Western Cape provinces. President Cyril Ramaphosa first announced the plan in his state-of-the-nation address earlier this month, and his acting police minister said last week that the deployment will begin within days.
