Portugal has named former national criminal police chief Luís Neves as interior minister, as the government prepares to channel billions of euros into rebuilding infrastructure and homes destroyed by deadly storms over the past month.
The 60-year-old Neves was nominated on Friday, according to a statement from the Portuguese presidency, and sworn in on Monday after his predecessor resigned amid criticism over the handling of the storms, which submerged entire neighborhoods, crippled transport links and disrupted power and water supplies in parts of the country.
