Mark Shuttleworth, a technology tycoon, will start paying stipends to the inhabitants of an island off Africa’s west coast where he owns luxury resorts to help preserve its biodiversity.

Shuttleworth will pay as much as 20,000 dobras ($958) annually in quarterly installments to about 3,000 people, around 60% of Principe’s adult population, starting next week, Faya, his nonprofit which will disburse the money, said in a statement to Bloomberg.
