Feb. 17 marks the start of the Year of the Fire Horse, a period in the lunar calendar defined by bold energy and decisive action, according to the Chinese zodiac. This year’s fire element adds some extra daring to an already headstrong sign, leaving behind the slower, more reflective pace of last year’s wood snake.

Lunar New Year is traditionally a time for gathering with family, cleaning house and exchanging gifts — not only in China but also across several other Asian countries, such as Vietnam and South Korea, and their diasporas. Giving money in red envelopes remains the most common way to show appreciation, but the season is also a key opportunity to refresh one’s wardrobe and home, shaking off any stale energy as the new year begins.
