The Bangladesh Nationalist Party took an early lead in vote counting following the country’s first general election since a student-led revolution in 2024.

The BNP, which was sidelined during much of the rule of now-ousted leader Sheikh Hasina, was leading an alliance headed by the Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami with the student-led National Citizen Party. Local TV channels reported the BNP winning between 64 and 124 seats as of midnight in Dhaka, while Jamaat-e-Islami held between 23 and 38 seats.
