The exit of Standard Chartered Plc’s chief financial officer caught investors and analysts by surprise. It was no different for the bank itself.

There was shock when Diego De Giorgi, 55, told the lender in recent days of his plans to leave, according to a person familiar with the matter. De Giorgi had been seen as the top internal candidate to ultimately replace Chief Executive Officer Bill Winters.
