San Francisco’s public schools are closed Monday for about 48,000 students as city teachers go on strike for the first time since 1979.

Teachers are seeking a 9% raise over two years, fully funded family health care, more staff and smaller classes — demands that the school district says are unaffordable. Members of the United Educators of San Francisco, which represents educators, nurses, counselors and psychologists, had voted almost 98% to authorize the strike.
