Slovakia’s Fico Calls to Suspend Europe’s Flagship Carbon Market
Slovakia’s prime minister called for a suspension of the European Union’s central instrument to reduce carbon emissions, arguing the move is necessary to ease pressure on industry and boost the bloc’s competitiveness.
In a letter, Robert Fico urged European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to consider a halt to the EU’s Emissions Trading System for four to five years. As the bloc stands by its ambition to zero-out carbon emissions by mid-century, Fico criticized EU climate targets for raising consumer prices and harming industry.
