Far-Right Leader to Compete in Rare Portugal Presidential Runoff

A far-right candidate is set to compete with a moderate opponent in Portugal’s first run off presidential election in 40 years, in a vote that underscores how fragmented the country’s political landscape has become.

Far-right leader Andre Ventura will face Socialist candidate Antonio Jose Seguro in the second round of Portugal’s presidential race on Feb. 8, the first runoff vote for a president since 1986.
