As European leaders seek to persuade President Donald Trump that Greenland’s security is best defended by NATO, broader concerns persist about US expansionism. Bloomberg News spoke with Bob Rae, Canada’s ambassador to the United Nations from 2020 to 2025. A lawyer by training, Rae was previously the premier of Ontario and interim leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.

Rae talked about the implications of US involvement in Venezuela and the threats the White House has made against other countries and Greenland. Americans, he said, need to be aware of the potential domestic consequences that may result from an administration that appears willing to flout international law. “It is a corollary that I think exists — governments that act with a sense of impunity on the global stage treat their own citizens the same way,” Rae said. “And that has severe implications for the democratic process inside the United States.”
