Less than 18 months after losing most of their House of Commons seats in the UK general election, the Scottish National Party is on the march again north of the English border.

An SNP bounce-back seemed unlikely in July 2024, when the party lost 39 of the 48 Scottish seats it held in Westminster. But with elections for the Scottish Parliament due in May, the pro-independence party leads recent polls by 10 points or more from its nearest challenger, Nigel Farage’s populist party, Reform UK.
