Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi signaled he’s seeking a “new beginning” with neighboring Bangladesh in a personal message to Tarique Rahman, acting head of the country’s largest political party.

Modi made the diplomatic overture in a condolence letter to Rahman following the death of his mother, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Rahman, who was exiled in the UK for 17 years, returned to Bangladesh last week to take full control of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, which is considered the frontrunner to win February’s parliamentary elections.
