Guinea-Bissau’s interim military leader pledged to crack down on the drug trade and graft as he took office Thursday, a day after soldiers arrested President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and called for last weekend’s elections to be annulled.

“We will vigorously combat drug trafficking, state corruption, political corruption and corruption within Guinean society,” General Horta N’Tam, the army chief of staff, said during a swearing-in ceremony in the capital, Bissau. “In this fight, the army’s actions to restore security and national order require the cooperation of all Guineans.”
