Soldiers in Guinea-Bissau arrested President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and called for last weekend’s elections to be annulled, citing an alleged plot by drug traffickers and others to rig the outcome.
A group of officers calling itself the High Military Command for the Restoration of National Security and Public Order said it had taken control of the country and suspended state institutions, the latest in a string of coups to destabilize West Africa over recent years.
