Weed Drinks That Get You Very, Very High Could Be Gone Soon
Cannabis beverages with up to 100mg of THC are increasingly popular. A ban on hemp is threatening their survival.
For the past three years, Crescent Canna has been selling hemp-derived THC seltzer in sour watermelon, strawberry lime, ginger lemonade and other flavors. The Louisiana-based company started with 5 milligrams and 10mg of THC per 12-ounce can, enough for most users to get a good buzz and typical of what many gummies might contain. But these days, the product topping its sales charts is a strawberry lemonade with a whopping 50mg per can, sufficient to get you seriously, even uncomfortably, high. “We sold out about as fast as we could make it,” says Crescent Canna Chief Executive Officer Joe Gerrity. “We realized very quickly that we had something that people wanted.”
Crescent Canna is one of many brands in a nascent market that’s seeing success with high-potency beverages. Unlike weed drinks made from other types of cannabis that are relegated to dispensaries, it’s not uncommon to come across 50mg cans from hemp-based brands like Cantrip and Cycling Frog on the shelves of grocery and convenience stores; St. Ides and CQ make seltzers and sodas with a massive 100mg of THC per can that, in many states, can be bought wherever beer and wine are sold. In places with regulated THC serving sizes, some companies have creatively interpreted the rules by saying a 12-oz can counts as multiple, though it’s pretty hard to imagine anyone drinking one-twelfth of a can at a time. In reality, these are extreme drinks for extreme intoxication.
