New Mexico’s senior US senator is demanding that Immigration and Customs Enforcement immediately transfer people out of a privately run detention facility whose contract expired last month.

In a letter to Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons, Senator Martin Heinrich called the continued detention of immigrants at the Torrance County Detention Facility in Estancia, New Mexico, “extremely concerning.” He questioned the agency’s authority to keep some 550 people in ICE detention at the facility after the contract expired at the end of October.
