Sudan’s army rebuffed a US proposal for a ceasefire and said it will rally public support to fight rebels who’ve captured much of the western half of the country.

The decision came after army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan chaired an emergency meeting of the military’s defense council on Thursday to discuss the security situation in the North African nation. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces last month overran the city of El-Fasher, the army’s last stronghold in the vast western Darfur region.
