Carlos Mazon, the regional leader of Valencia and a conservative party official, said on Monday that he would resign, following the controversy over the government’s response to a massive flood last year that led to the deaths of 229 people.

“I can’t take it anymore,” Mazon said in a public address Monday. He added that he did “all that was humanly possible for the recovery” of the region and blamed the national government for not not helping more.
