South Africa Automaker Strike Looms as Union Talks Break Down

South Africa’s largest union threatened to strike at several automakers after wage talks collapsed, risking disruption to an industry that makes up more than a fifth of the nation’s manufacturing output and adding pressure to a moribund economy.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa will hold a general meeting in the coming days to decide whether to give employers 48 hours’ notice of a strike and when to issue it, spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said by phone.
