Madagascar’s Military Leader Sworn in as President After Takeover

Army Colonel Michael Randrianirina was sworn in as Madagascar’s new president on Friday, cementing his hold on power after a military takeover.

The inauguration ceremony for the 51-year-old was held at the constitutional court’s headquarters in the capital, Antananarivo, and was attended by the US ambassador and several other country representatives. He pledged to strengthen national unity and human rights, and uphold the constitution and the nation’s laws.
