Portugal Premier Montenegro Boosted by Gains in Local Elections

The minority government of Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro received a boost on Sunday after his Social Democratic Party emerged as the largest force in nationwide municipal elections.

The Social Democrats and their coalition allies won 136 town halls with all districts reporting, according to the government’s election website. That’s up from 114 in 2021. The Socialist Party took 128 of the total 308 municipalities in Sunday’s vote.
