South Africa’s Democratic Alliance said former leader Helen Zille will be its candidate for mayor of Johannesburg as the party seeks to take control of the country’s biggest city in next year’s local-government elections.

The 74-year-old was head of the DA from 2007 to 2015 and currently serves as the party’s Federal Council chairwoman. She has previously held the posts of Cape Town mayor and premier of the Western Cape province.
