Lower house Speaker Hugo Motta spent the weekend in talks with government members and Supreme Court justices amid his search on an agreement with lawmakers from the centrão coalition to avoid putting a proposed amnesty to vote. That measure would be applied to people who were jailed following January 2023 attacks on government buildings in Brasilia and to former President Jair Bolsonaro, who was sentenced last week to over 27 years in prison, says O Globo columnist Malu Gaspar, who cites unidentified people familiar with the discussions.

One of the proposals that gained momentum over the weekend was to put a separate bill on congressional prerogatives to a vote before amnesty. According to that proposal, Congress would be responsible for authorizing the start of all legal proceedings against fellow lawmakers, the report said.
