US Vows to Respond to Bolsonaro’s Conviction

Photographer: Arthur Menescal/BloombergThe Brazilian Supreme Court’s decision to convict former President Jair Bolsonaro reverberated in the US: Donald Trump called the ruling “bad for Brazil,” while Secretary of State Marco Rubio denounced the trial as a “witch hunt” and vowed to “respond accordingly.”
Brazil’s government pushed back. The Foreign Ministry said that external “threats” would “not intimidate our democracy.” President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, in an interview with BandNews, added that he does not fear additional US sanctions and that Brazil will know how to respond appropriately should new measures be imposed.
