At least 16 people were killed and 21 injured when the Elevador da Glória, the yellow-and-white funicular that carries passengers up a steep hillside in central Lisbon, slammed into a building Wednesday evening. A postcard symbol of the city and a fixture on tourist itineraries, the tram carries about 3 million riders annually.
