Wytham Abbey hit the market for just under £15 million ($20 million) last year, but the sellers have cut the asking price by almost two thirds, down to £5.95 million. If the historic home in Oxfordshire, UK—listed with Savills Plc—sells at that figure, it would be a substantial loss for the Effective Ventures Foundation, the group that purchased the 27-bedroom manor house in April 2022 for £14.9 million. It bought the property with grants from Open Philanthropy, whose funders include billionaire Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz. The home was used as a workshop space for discussions on topics such as the risks posed by artificial intelligence.

It’s the latest chapter in the saga of Wytham Abbey, whose purchase initially stirred controversy that a charity dedicated to the most efficient use of money for the maximum good was buying one of the finest manor homes in England.
