Sri Lanka Ex-President Gets Bail After Arrest on Misuse of Funds

Sri Lanka’s former President Ranil Wickremesinghe was released on bail after being held in custody since Aug. 22 on allegations he misused government funds while head of state in 2023.

Wickremesinghe — the first local ex-president to be arrested — was freed on three sureties of 5 million rupees ($16,551) each even as he was unable to attend proceedings at the Fort Magistrate’s Court in Colombo on Tuesday. The 76-year-old leader remains hospitalized after being transferred from prison over the weekend due to worsening health.
