California has sued the federal government more than once per week since Donald Trump returned to the White House, showing that the most populous state remains on the front lines of Democratic resistance to the president’s political agenda.

Governor Gavin Newsom, widely seen as a likely 2028 presidential candidate, and state Attorney General Rob Bonta have together filed at least 37 lawsuits in Trump’s first 200 days back in office, spending $5 million. In several cases, California has taken the lead among coalitions of Democratic states including New York, Illinois, Massachusetts and Washington.
