Australia has approved the sale of slaughter-free Japanese quail, becoming only the third country in the world to permit the sale of meat cultivated from animal cells.

Sydney-based startup Vow will offer parfait, foie gras and other dishes made from quail cells at local restaurants within weeks, it said in a statement. That follows an amendment to Australia’s food standards code published Wednesday after a years-long assessment.
