Pope Francis spent a tranquil night and was resting early Saturday, the Vatican said in a brief update, after his respiratory condition worsened on Friday.

The 88-year-old pontiff, who’s hospitalized in Rome with pneumonia in both lungs, suffered a spasm of his airways Friday afternoon that led him to inhale vomit.
