BYD Co. reiterated its commitment to commence production of electric vehicles in Brazil this year, despite authorities accusing one of the Chinese carmaker’s subcontractors of labor abuses.

BYD said in December that it aims to complete work on a facility where staff would finish putting together partially assembled car components by early March. Even after authorities late last month found people working and living in slave-like conditions and halted construction, BYD’s top executive in Brazil said the company will try to begin car output sometime this year.
