In 1980, as battery-powered quartz watches were crushing the traditional mechanical watchmaking industry, Heuer AG laid off Gerd-Rüdiger Lang. The manufacturer didn’t have enough cash for his last paycheck, so instead he asked to be paid in mechanical movements—viewed at the time as worthless.
Three years later, Lang and his wife, Françoise, used those movements to create Chronoswiss in their Munich garage, under the motto “For the love of mechanics.” Their pioneering vision helped keep old-fashioned watchmaking alive.
