Former Foreign and Defense Minister Kono Taro became the third lawmaker to throw his hat in the ring for the leadership of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party with a call for the nation to restore fiscal discipline.

Kono, who is currently digital transformation minister, also said it was appropriate for the Bank of Japan to continue normalizing monetary policy as long as inflation remains in line with the bank’s expectations.
