Welcome to the Fall Culture Preview, where we’re highlighting the best in entertainment as part of the September issue of Bloomberg Businessweek: The five museum exhibitions we’re most excited to see, the eight movies that will have people talking, and the five books to put on your reading list. English Teacher
The premise of this FX show may sound more suited for drama: a gay teacher in the Austin suburbs who’s placed under investigation for kissing his ex, a former colleague, on campus. Yet in the hands of actor Brian Jordan Alvarez, who also created the show, it becomes a funny and often heartfelt workplace comedy. In the pilot, he gets to keep his position but is told he can no longer date fellow faculty, a rule that immediately poses an issue when a hot new teacher joins the administration. An array of characters, including a bro-ey but supportive PE teacher and an earnest best girlfriend, help get Alvarez out of (and into) professional predicaments. Sept. 2 on FX
