Two subsidiaries of America Movil SAB, the Mexican telecom company that operates an underwater cable network shuttling data across the US and Central and South America, were fined by US regulators for failing to seek proper approvals.

Latam Telecommunications and Puerto Rico Telephone Co. — both identified as majority-owned, indirect units of billionaire Carlos Slim’s telecommunications firm America Movil — were fined $1 million each and put on compliance plans after failing to obtain authorization before connecting new subsea cable landing stations, the Federal Communications Commission said Tuesday.
