Hollywood uses spring to rev its engines: Blockbusters start creeping into theaters ahead of summer, and series premiere before the cutoff for Emmy consideration in late May. With the industry still playing catch-up from last year’s twin writers and actors strikes, this season will notably also see the debut of major star vehicles that had been lying in wait. Here’s what you should be watching.
You might be tempted to roll your eyes at yet another postapocalyptic video game turned into prestige TV. But Falloutaims to tweak the genre with wacky humor balanced against its blood, bombs and organ-harvesting robots. In a post-nuclear Los Angeles, a cheery young woman (Ella Purnell, who played Jackie in Yellowjackets) belongs to a privileged class known as “Vault Dwellers” who fled into a utopian underground. But even when there’s no grass left, it’s still greener on the other side, and so she emerges to restart civilization. It doesn’t go well. Directed in part by Jonathan Nolan (HBO’s Westworld), the cast includes heavy hitters Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks) as the heroine’s father and Walton Goggins (Justified) playing a noseless bounty hunter.
