When considering what makes a bed comfortable, we tend to focus on measuring thread counts, comparing goose down fillings and looking for memory foam with the perfect level of firmness. But designers lately have a soft spot for the frame. Instead of cold metal or squeaky wood, these models come upholstered in plush merino wool and velvet—proof that not just pillows can be puffy.

This design by E-ggs for Miniforms features a 3-foot-tall headboard that looks like a gigantic pillow, set on an ash wood frame. That interplay between softness and strength is inspired by the bed’s namesake: a stomping exercise performed by sumo wrestlers to ward off evil spirits—and maybe also bad dreams. From $6,170
