Hurricane-force wind gusts whipped across the central US Friday, causing dust storms and knocking down tree limbs, the National Weather Service said.

High wind warnings cover parts of seven states including Texas and Colorado, where a 105-mile (169 kilometer) per-hour gust was recorded at 11:28 p.m. near Colorado Springs Thursday, according to the agency. While the wind didn’t set a state record, it came close, said Kyle Mozley, a weather service meteorologist in Pueblo, Colorado.
