The Boston Red Sox, mired in last place in the American League East division two years after winning the World Series, hired Dave Dombrowski as president of baseball operations and announced the departure of Ben Cherington as general manager.

The Red Sox said in a news release Tuesday night that Dombrowski, who was ousted as team president of the Detroit Tigers two weeks ago, will have responsibility for all baseball operations matters effective immediately.
