The Arizona Cardinals hired Jennifer Welter as an preseason intern coaching inside linebackers, and the team said she’s the first woman coach in National Football League history.
Welter, 37, a Boston College rugby player who went on to spend 14 seasons as a women’s pro football player, was a linebackers and special teams coach earlier this year for the Texas Revolution of the men’s Indoor Football League.
