The U.S. Transportation Department is giving California almost $1 billion for its San Francisco-to-Los Angeles high-speed rail project, the agency said in an e-mailed statement today.

The $928.6 million was awarded to California from the U.S. government’s 2010 budget, said Brie Sachse, a Transportation Department spokeswoman. The money, which will help build a segment of 800-mile line in the Central Valley, comes from two awards that have already been announced.
