Canada’s Liberal Party has won a fourth consecutive mandate, but fell a few seats short of having Prime Minister Mark Carney command a majority government. They beat the Conservatives, who increased their overall vote share despite their leader, Pierre Poilievre, losing his own seat.
Carney, 60, who replaced Justin Trudeau as Liberal leader and prime minister earlier this year, has promised to start comprehensive trade talks with US President Donald Trump. At the same time, he’s warned that the relationship with the US is irrevocably changed and Canada needs to diversify its trading partners.
The leftist New Democrats will lose official party status in the House of Commons, failing to reach the 12-seat mark. The Bloc Quebecois, which only runs candidates in majority French-speaking Quebec, the country’s second most populous province, will lose around 10 seats. Both parties appeared to have kept enough ridings to hold the balance of power.

But when Trudeau announced his resignation in January and President Donald Trump took office in Washington, the Liberals started to climb in opinion polls.
